Mary Moorkens, textile artist living in Dublin.
I love the rhythm of making marks with thread and the texture of textiles
- the provenance of antique lace - the untold story in a vintage glove.
I want to add my story with my own stitches.
Textiles reinvented are a constant source of fun and satisfaction for me.
Natural dyeing excites me and it features strongly as backgrounds in my art.
My work is sometimes traditional - sometimes experimental. The stitches are often tiny.
My background is in Graphic Design and I studied Visual Communications in NCAD.
Although I worked as a designer I have always created stitched art.
I often combine my graphic background and my stitch experience to create hand
stitched collage works. I love stories, I love historic fabric, I love stitching and enjoy
bringing them all together in my textile art.
My work has been in exhibitions throughout Ireland, in Europe and USA and have won awards in
Ireland and US.
I designed and produced my own knitwear label “Molly Lamb” and I was delighted to reach
the final of the Irish Designer of the Year on three different occasions with my knitwear.
I also won an RDS craft award medal and the RDS William Smith O'Brien Cup
and won first place in the accessories category of the Hoffman Challenge in USA.
I equally love the deadline for an exhibition and the comfort of small slow stitch projects.
My textiles sell on etsy and in galleries in Ireland.
This blog was born to help me get a better sense of direction and find out more about the art I like to make. Sometimes by explaining to others you explain to yourself.
your work is lovely can make more of this to sell
